Chinquapin Oak Seedling

Chinquapin Oak Seedling

A batch of seedlings from my Q. muehlenbergii produced this interesting plant. The tap root had apparently broken off and sprouted seven new adventitious roots. At the time the seven roots grew, the tap root was facing up, so the shoot went in the same direction.br/br/I decided to take advantage of this root arrangement to make a nice root arrangement for a future bonsai. I sewed the roots onto some cardboard in the arrangement shown. After sewing all the roots down, I trimmed their ends of (about the last 20% of each root). I planted it in a flat pot (about 2 inches deep) and then bent the shoot up above the soil level.br/br/This batch of chinquapin oaks is producing seedlings with multi-trunks, so even if this shoot doesn't survive, a new, well formed shoot should emerge.
